ADHD: Children (Ages 6-17)

Book A Session
What is it and what are the symptoms?

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, and activity levels. It presents in three main types: Inattentive, Hyperactive-Impulsive, and Combined, each impacting a child’s ability to focus, regulate behavior, and manage daily tasks.

ADHD can influence a child’s academic performance, social interactions, emotional regulation, and self-esteem. Early diagnosis and the right support can make a significant difference, helping children develop essential coping skills and thrive in both school and home environments.

At MyPace, our ADHD assessments follow NICE Guidelines, ensuring accurate identification and tailored treatment strategies to support your child’s unique needs.

Inattentive Type

Children with the inattentive presentation of ADHD may struggle with:

  • Difficulty focusing on tasks and following instructions.
  • Frequently making careless mistakes in schoolwork.
  • Appearing distracted or daydreaming, even when spoken to.
  • Forgetfulness and frequently losing items like school supplies.
  • Avoiding tasks that require sustained mental effort, such as homework.
  • Trouble organising tasks and managing time effectively.
Hyperactive-Impulsive Type

The hyperactive-impulsive presentation of ADHD is often marked by:

  • Excessive fidgeting, tapping, or difficulty staying seated.
  • Talking excessively and interrupting conversations.
  • Constant movement, such as running or climbing in inappropriate situations.
  • Difficulty waiting their turn in group settings.
  • Acting without thinking, leading to impulsive decisions.
  • Struggling to engage in quiet activities.
Combined Type

Children with combined type ADHD experience symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity. This may present as:

  • Difficulty concentrating and staying on task.
  • High energy levels, restlessness, and constant movement.
  • Impulsivity, such as speaking out of turn or interrupting others.
  • Trouble managing emotions and frustration.
  • Challenges with organisation, completing assignments, and following routines.

Early identification and a comprehensive approach to treatment, including behavioral strategies, therapy, and medication (if appropriate), can help children with ADHD develop the skills they need to succeed at school, home, and in social settings.

Treatment options

ADHD treatment for children usually involves a combination of medication, therapy, and lifestyle adjustments, tailored to their individual needs. As children grow and develop, their treatment plan may be adapted to ensure they continue receiving the right support to manage their symptoms effectively.

Stimulant Medication

Stimulant medications are commonly prescribed to help children with ADHD improve focus, impulse control, and attention span. These medications work by increasing dopamine and noradrenaline levels in the brain, which are essential for regulating behaviour and concentration.

Non-Stimulant Medication

For children who do not respond well to stimulants or experience side effects, non-stimulant medications may be an alternative. These can help improve focus and reduce impulsivity without directly stimulating the nervous system.

Behavioural Therapy & Parent Training

Behavioural therapy is an important part of ADHD treatment, helping children develop:

  • Coping strategies to manage frustration and emotions.
  • Organisational skills for schoolwork and daily tasks.
  • Social skills to improve peer interactions and friendships.

Parent training programmes can also provide caregivers with tools to support their child’s development, reinforce positive behaviours, and establish effective routines at home.

Educational Support & School Accommodations

Children with ADHD may benefit from Individualised Education Plans (IEPs) or 504 Plans, which provide classroom accommodations such as:

  • Extra time on tests and assignments.
  • Structured routines and visual schedules.
  • Support with focus and organisation.

Collaboration between parents, teachers, and healthcare professionals ensures that children receive the right support in their learning environment.

Lifestyle Adjustments

Daily habits play a vital role in managing ADHD symptoms. Key lifestyle factors include:

  • Regular physical activity to improve focus and energy regulation.
  • A healthy, balanced diet that supports brain function and mood stability.
  • Consistent sleep routines to reduce hyperactivity and improve attention.

By combining medical, behavioural, and lifestyle strategies, children with ADHD can develop the skills they need to thrive academically, socially, and at home.

Key info before you book with us

We want to ensure you have all the essential information before booking an ADHD assessment or treatment for your child. Please read the following details carefully to understand how our process works and what to expect.

We Are an Entirely Private Provider

Our services are fully private and are not part of the NHS Right to Choose pathway. This means:

  • A diagnosis from our clinic may not speed up NHS treatment, as the NHS may still require its own assessment before offering support.
  • If your child is currently on an NHS waiting list, you can choose to have a private assessment and treatment with us while you wait.
Speak with Your GP Beforehand

We strongly recommend discussing your GP’s Shared Care Agreement (SCA) policy before booking. Not all GPs accept private diagnoses or prescriptions under shared care, so it’s important to understand:

  • Whether your GP will consider an SCA after your child has shown stability on medication for at least three months.
  • The financial commitment of private ADHD care, as medication and follow-up appointments will be needed if shared care is not accepted.

Understanding this beforehand will help manage your expectations throughout your child’s ADHD journey with us.

Active Parent & Patient Engagement Is Essential

For the best possible outcomes, active involvement from both parents/carers and the child is crucial. This means:

  • Providing accurate and detailed information during the assessment.
  • Following recommended treatment plans, including medication and behavioural strategies if advised.
  • Maintaining open communication with us about your child’s progress.

We are committed to guiding and supporting your child, but their success with ADHD management depends on a collaborative effort between our clinic, parents, schools, and the child themselves.

Video Consultations Are Non-Refundable

All ADHD consultations, including initial assessments and follow-ups, are conducted via video call and are non-refundable.

  • There is usually a small window for rescheduling, but this may incur an additional charge.
  • Once an appointment is booked, that time is reserved solely for your child, meaning it cannot be offered to another patient.

This policy ensures that our clinicians' schedules remain efficient, allowing us to provide timely care for all our patients.

We Do Not Currently Offer Payment Plans

At this time, we do not offer payment plans for ADHD assessments or treatment.

  • Payments are taken at each stage of your child’s ADHD journey.
  • Please ensure you are comfortable with the costs involved before booking.
